Our Big Ted’s Room is a vibrant and engaging pre-school space where children are encouraged to lead their own learning, explore their interests, and develop the skills and confidence they need for the next stage in their journey. With a carefully designed mix of open-ended resources, creative spaces, and access to both indoor and outdoor areas, children are free to make choices, take the lead, and develop a love of learning through meaningful, hands-on experiences.
The room is thoughtfully laid out to feel familiar and manageable for the children, helping them feel secure in their environment. This sense of belonging is enhanced by the strong relationships built with their peers and with our experienced, knowledgeable staff, who act as co-learners and guides, responding to the children’s interests and supporting them to investigate, question, and create.
Our team is passionate about early education and deeply committed to child-centred, play-based learning. They skilfully observe, listen, and scaffold learning opportunities, using the Curriculum for Excellence to ensure experiences are rich, varied, and developmentally appropriate. Whether a child is exploring early literacy and numeracy, creating a story in the role-play area, or investigating nature outdoors, their ideas and voices are always at the heart of what we do.

Children can free flow between the indoors and our dedicated outdoor space, choosing where and how they want to learn. Outdoor play is a daily part of life in Big Ted’s, and we also make regular outings into the local area and take part in Forest School sessions.
Each child has a dedicated key worker and an online learning journal that documents their progress, interests, and achievements. We work in close partnership with parents to support and celebrate every step of a child’s development. In addition to daily feedback, we invite families to be active participants in nursery life — from parents’ evenings and curriculum information events to play sessions, summer barbecues, and skill-sharing opportunities.
We also enhance the children’s experiences with a variety of extra-curricular activities, including Leaps and Bounds for movement and physical development, and Forest Schools.
