Food and Nutrition at Childsplay

Food and mealtimes are more than just a part of the daily routine.
At Childsplay Nursery, we see food and mealtimes as key opportunities for learning, building independence, and developing healthy, lifelong habits. We are committed to promoting a positive and balanced approach to food, nurturing each child’s understanding of nutrition while creating calm, enjoyable, and sociable dining experiences.
Following Setting the Table and other local and national guidance, our nursery chef prepares fresh, nutritious meals and snacks each day, using natural ingredients to create a varied and well-balanced diet. Our menus are thoughtfully planned in advance, running on a five-day, four-week rotation and reviewed regularly to reflect seasonal changes, cultural diversity, and the evolving needs of the children.
Children are offered a morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack, with rolling snack times available so that they can eat when they feel hungry — without interrupting their play or learning. We believe strongly in supporting children’s autonomy while also encouraging them to try new foods, explore different tastes and textures, and enjoy mealtimes as relaxed, social occasions.

At Childsplay, food is not just fuel — it’s an opportunity for connection, learning, and wellbeing.
In our Big Ted’s Room, mealtimes are a particularly special part of the day. Tables are thoughtfully set with real crockery, cutlery, napkins, tablecloths, flowers, water jugs, and name cards — creating a warm, family-style setting where children of different ages dine together, modelling positive eating habits, conversation, and independence. Children pour their own water, serve themselves when appropriate, and are gently supported to use real utensils, show good manners, and take pride in being part of a shared mealtime experience.
We understand that every child is different, and we are fully committed to meeting individual dietary needs. Whether a child has allergies, cultural or religious dietary requirements, or a particular preference, our chef carefully prepares substitute meals that reflect the main menu as closely as possible, ensuring that all children feel included and well-cared-for at the table.
We also use food and mealtimes as an opportunity to celebrate special occasions, festivals, and cultural events, occasionally adapting our snacks or menus to reflect these moments in a fun and meaningful way. By creating a respectful and inclusive food culture, we help children build the foundations of healthy eating that will support them for life.
